Blue and turquoise brush alphabet. Calligraphy by Karlgeorg Hoefer. The Harrison Collection of Calligraphy & Lettering, San Francisco Public Library.
2014 marks the 100th birthday of the calligrapher and typographer Karlgeorg Hoefer. He founded the Schreibwerkstatt Klingspor Offenbach (Klingspor Calligraphy Workshop, Offenbach) and created several typefaces, including FE Schrift, an anti-falsification script used today in German vehicle license plates. Much of Hoefer’s calligraphy work was done with a brush, and this is reflected in his typefaces, such as Salto and Sho Roman.
Here’s a piece of his that I saw at the Book Arts and Special Collections Center of the San Francisco Public Library.
