I have always sympathized with King Henry IV who desperately laments his inability to go to sleep.
It is the dead of night, and civil war rages around him. He wonders why all his subjects are sleeping while he alone remains wide awake in his comfortable chamber. Are we to believe that the more a man is burdened with responsibility, the harder it is to sleep? Friar Lawrence says as much in Romeo and Juliet: “Care keeps his watch in every old man’s eye, And where care lodges, sleep can never lie.”
Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown.

Dear Raoul,
Boy am I glad to be on your mailing list. Your work is so inspiring. Thank you.
I myself have trouble sleeping, so indeed it resonates with me.
It was so nice to meet yur wife in Dorothy Yuki’s workshop.
Hugs to both of you.

Strong and beautiful, Raoul—a wonderful piece. Did you do this while suffering insomnia? 😉

Thanks! I probably did this late at night, when I do most of my calligraphy.
